Challenge

Villages in Murung Raya, Central Kalimantan, hold potential across several priority commodities — coffee, patchouli oil, and aquaculture — that hadn't yet been systematically tested for viability. AlamTri needed a model that let these commodities be tested and validated before scaling further, reducing the risk of misdirected investment. The challenge was designing a sandbox model flexible enough for three commodities with very different characteristics.

What we did

Our team developed a sandboxing model to test and validate three priority village commodities in Murung Raya: coffee, patchouli oil, and aquaculture. The sandbox approach allows each commodity to be trialed at a controlled scale before larger investment decisions are made. The project is Phase 2 of RISE UP with AlamTri and remains ongoing.

Outcome

Murung Raya now has a running sandbox model to test the viability of coffee, patchouli oil, and aquaculture as priority village commodities. The model gives AlamTri and communities an evidence-based basis for decisions before investment is scaled up. For our team, RISE UP Phase 2 extends the collaboration with AlamTri that began with the SIAP PANGAN program in South Kalimantan in 2025.
