Challenge

Communities in Bintuni Bay held potential in commodities such as nutmeg, pineapple, and red fruit, but lacked market-dynamics data to plan enterprise development realistically. The Samdhana Institute needed market research that could translate directly into operational planning with communities. Without adequate market data, commodity-development decisions risked resting on assumption alone.

What we did

Our team researched market dynamics for three commodities — nutmeg, pineapple, and red fruit — in Bintuni Bay. The findings then fed into an operational planning workshop with communities, translating market insight into concrete next steps. The work ran alongside the Samdhana Institute as a continuation of indigenous livelihood facilitation in the area.

Outcome

Communities in Bintuni Bay gained a clearer market picture for their three priority commodities, along with an operational plan produced through the workshop. The research complemented the earlier indigenous livelihood blueprint with more specific market data. The project reinforced our approach of pairing research with participatory facilitation.
